Lone Survivor Summary
A SEAL bleeds, sweats, and goes through torment to receive such a prestigious title. Starting out at boot camp, going through Hell
Week, all the way to coming under enemy fire, SEALs is what it takes to be a SEAL. Marcus Luttrell went through all these in honor of
his country. From a little boy his father taught him and his brother how to survive in the wild. He learned how to hunt, shoot, and live off the land. Possibly most importantly, he learned how to swim. He excelled in swimming and holding his breath, two things that helped him to become a SEAL. Marcus described his time in boot camp as a cake walk compared to his experience in Hell Week. Hell Week's purpose is to destroy any shred of doubt of being a SEAL and to rid of those who weren't physically and mentally strong enough. After Hell Week, Marcus knew he would make it as a SEAL. he was now more determined than ever. Soon enough he officially claimed the title of a Navy SEAL.
"Operation Redwing is a go!" was what Marcus Luttrell, Matthew Axelson , Mike Murphy, and Danny Dietz had been so anxious to hear. Their mission was to exterminate a high valued Taliban target. A little after midnight they were extracted into the mountains of Hindu Kush. During the mission they were compromised by a Taliban informant. Left with the decision to either let him go or kill an unarmed "civilian", it was not an easy decision. They decided to let him go and abort the mission by retreating up the mountain and radioing for extraction. While trying to get comms to work, they realized Taliban were closing in. Marcus aimed down his scope, put the crosshairs on a Taliban soldier and pulled the trigger which marked the beginning of one of the saddest stories any soldier has ever lived through. Bullets were flying everywhere and Taliban were dropping left and right. The four SEALs were forced to jump down mountain sides numerous times in order to escape. During the battle Danny was critically wounded. While being protected by Marcus a bullet hit Danny in the head and ended his life. Not too soon after both Axelson and Mike were also killed, leaving Marcus to survive. Marcus was helped by an Afghanistan man who was passing through. He was taken to a nearby village and his wounds were treated. Soon after he was rescued by American soldiers.
Four SEALs went on that mountain, risking their life to protect the country they loved so much. Three of those heroes gave up their life to serve their country. All four of them will be forever remembered for their courageous acts of valor in the face of them enemy and their will to press on, no matter the odds.
