Lone Survivor Analysis
Before reading the book, I expected it to be about a group of Navy SEALs carrying out a mission where in the end one of them must survive on his own. I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. It was informative about what it takes to become a SEAL, it describes what one man had to do to to survive, and tells the story of some of our nation's bravest heroes. I was motivated to read all through the book because it honors some of our fallen heroes and brings out a sense of American pride. My initial impression of the book's purpose informative and didactic. It shows the honorable actions of four of the bravest warriors in American history. It also teaches a lesson that shows will power, determination, and brotherhood can get you through anything that might be thrown at you. The work was not a difficult read as it uses no words that are not well known. Before reading the book I already knew that our soldiers were the bravest people on the earth. By the end of the read, my eyes were opened up to the torment, sacrifice, and torture that they go through. I also had my eyes opened up to the brotherhood that our soldiers share.
The story is a nonfiction prose work. It tells the true story of a group of Navy SEALs that gave the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect the country that they held so dear.
This story uses a number of literary techniques. Some of the main techniques used include setting, point of view, irony, and language. The setting of hostile mountains in Afghanistan where possible death is never far paints of vivid picture of the dangers that these SEALs experienced. Point of view is the most important technique used. It shows the deaths of three brothers in arms through the eyes of a soldier who is forced to watch his brothers die in combat. Irony is also a major literary technique used in this novel. Marcus mentions how soldiers have to be more afraid of the liberals back in the United States than they are of the Taliban. He states that this is due to liberals who would put their own country's soldiers on trial for "murder." He states that the liberals have no idea what it is like to be under fire and have no idea what kind of decisions they have to make, making it not their place to judge. Finally, language is the last technique used. Throughout the story Marcus uses strong language. The uses of such language gives the words more power and shows that he feels strongly about what he is taking about.
The reading of this story was not enhanced by personal experiences because I have not gone through anything that can compare to the sacrifices that the men of Seal Team 10 gave. I agree with the evaluations given to this story by others, due to the fact that they thought very highly of it.
